The Effect of Hydrocarbon Pollution on Niger Delta Root Crops: A Case Study of Cocoyam [Colocasia Esculenta]

Abstract: This paper investigates effects of re-occurring oil spillages on cocoyam, Colocasia esculenta (L.). It studies changes in petiole lengths, leaf blades, chlorophyll concentrations in leaves, and PAH and BTEX concentrations in tubers for three generations under diverse conditions. 8 10-gallon grow bags were used: Grow bags 5–8 were treated with a controlled quantity (4 L/cubic metre) of liquid crude hydrocarbon in June 2019–2021, with two replications, after a 2-3-day interval within a week. In grow bags 3, 4, 7, and 8, poultry manure was applied once, 2 months after small seedlings emerged from the soil surface. Grow bags 1, 2, 3, and 4 served as “controls” for non-contaminated growth. Grow bags 7 and 8 were treated with hydrocarbons and poultry manure. In the first generation, coco yams planted in grow bags 7-8 showed growth responses (average values of 1.04 m, 51 cm, 4.45 mg/g for petiole length, leaf blade length, and chlorophyll concentration, respectively) very similar to coco yams planted in pristine soil with poultry manure with average values of 1.00 m, 50 cm, 3.45 mg/g. The cocoyams planted in pristine, organic-rich soils showed a similar response with or without fertilisers (average values of 0.98 m, 48 cm, 1.83 mg/g and 1.00 m, 50 cm, 3.45 mg/g), with progressively smaller leaves as the generation increased. The cocoyams in hydrocarbon-impacted soils generally perform poorer than those in uncontaminated soil, with or without poultry manure, by the second and third generations. Poultry manure on soils with recurring hydrocarbon contamination exacerbates soil weakening. Mean PAH and mean BTEX concentrations in tubers were 0.001-0.0035 mg/kg and <0.001 mg/kg, respectively. Cocoyams are not potent BTEX bioactive scavengers, but they gradually become more concentrated in PAH.

Patient Medical Records: Implementation of a Security Solution Based on the Hyperledger Fabric Blockchain

Abstract: This paper presents a solution for securing patient medical records using blockchain technology. In our approach, we first conducted a comparative study of various blockchains. This comparative study, based on the Ethereum, Corda and Hyperledger Fabric blockchains, enabled us to select Hyperledger Fabric as the development framework for our blockchain. The criteria justifying our choice are essentially: the modularity of the architecture, the variety of programming languages for smart contracts, the possibility of creating private channels between network members, high access control and data confidentiality, and a flexible consensus model. These criteria are crucial as they guarantee both the robustness and flexibility of the network in a shared medical record context. The proposed solution is a decentralised application that exchanges data in a consortiumtype blockchain network, involving three different organisations in a healthcare pathway: a hospital, a pharmacy, and a laboratory. Other organizations can be added to the network taking into account the need to share and secure healthcare information. Our solution utilises the IPFS (Interplanetary File System) protocol for distributed document storage, thereby enhancing data security and availability. To facilitate exchanges between network nodes, particular emphasis was also placed on the choice of consensus algorithm. First, we chose the Solo Orderer algorithm, which utilises a single Ordering Service node to process transactions and add them to blocks. Then, we used the Kafka orderer algorithm, which offers high scalability and robust resilience in production environments. The choice of these two consensus algorithms enabled us to set up and deploy a blockchain network that stores and secures sensitive data from medical analyses or examinations in a patient’s care pathway.

Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) continue to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Early detection and accurate diagnosis of the initial phases of CVDs are crucial for effective intervention and improved patient outcomes. In recent years, advances in intelligent automation and machine learning (ML) techniques have shown promise in enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of CVD detection. This systematic review aims to comprehensively analyze and synthesize the existing literature on the application of intelligent automation and ML adaptive classifier models in the detection of the initial phase of cardiovascular disease within the realm of medical science. The review follows a rigorous systematic methodology, including a comprehensive literature search, study selection, data extraction, and quality assessment. A wide range of scholarly articles from the reputed journal were searched to identify relevant studies published over a specified period. The selected studies were critically evaluated for methodological robustness and relevance to the research objective. The synthesis of findings reveals a diverse landscape of research endeavours focused on employing intelligent automation and ML adaptive classifier models for CVD detection. The review highlights the various types of ML algorithms utilized, such as neural networks, decision trees, and support vector machines, and their potential to enhance the accuracy of diagnosis by analyzing complex and heterogeneous data sources, clinical records, and omics data. Furthermore, the review discusses the challenges and limitations encountered in implementing these models, including issues related to data quality, interpretability, and ethical considerations. It also underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between medical practitioners, data scientists, and domain experts to ensure the seamless integration of these innovative technologies into clinical practice. In conclusion, this systematic review highlights the significant advancements made in the field of intelligent automation and ML adaptive classifier models in detecting the initial phase of cardiovascular disease. While acknowledging the potential of these approaches, it also emphasises the need for further research, standardisation, and validation to harness their full capabilities and contribute to more accurate, timely, and personalised cardiovascular disease diagnosis and management.

Abstract: To mitigate the detrimental impacts of disposing of used cooking oil (UCO) into the environment, which adversely affects marine life, human health, and agricultural outputs, this research proposes a novel approach incorporating this waste material into the concrete industry as a chemical admixture. To investigate this, an initial experimental program is designed to examine how used cooking oil affects various fresh properties and compressive strength at 3, 7, and 28 days of age of concrete. Concrete batches of M40 grade are meticulously prepared with varying proportions (ranging from 0% to 2%) of used cooking oil. To predict strength characteristics, an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is employed, consisting of three layers. The input layer comprises quantities of cement, coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, water content, superplasticiser, and the percentage of chemical admixture (UCO), a hidden layer for predicting the network system, and the output layer providing the concrete’s compressive strength.

Iris Scan with 3 Blinks Plus Emotion Recognition for Secure Payment Method for POS using Cloud Computing

Abstract: Financial transactions are becoming increasingly unsecured day by day due to phishing, stolen identity or stolen credentials. It is the need of the hour to innovate convenient and secure payment methods. Bearing this in mind, we propose in this paper a system that is complex to develop but achieves the target of providing convenient and safe financial payment services. To facilitate economic transactions, we now suggest using Face Recognition as the primary parameter, followed by Emotion Recognition as the second parameter, and then a 3-blink Iris scan as the third parameter. Once all three are positive, thetransaction will be successful.
