Abstract: This paper presents architecture for context adaptive variable length coding (CAVLC) used in the MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 video coding. The proposed design implements the fine-grained zero skipping at the 4×4 block level and the individual coefficient level. This design saves more than half of cycle count and 41% of area cost when compared with the other designs. The total gate count of the design is 10.2K gates. The design is implemented on Xilinx Spartan 3E Xc3s500 fpga and the total power consumption is estimated to be 0.081W.
